Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinical Services

There are several areas of focus in our practice that we would like to share with you. These areas of interest are, of course, in addition to our existing services.

1) Seizure surgery: Our division now offers comprehensive evaluation and operative management (when appropriate) for all types of pediatric seizure disorders. This service is provided in association with the Division of Pediatric Neurology at Primary Children's Medical Center and University of Utah.

2) Intrathecal Baclofen pumps for spasticity: We have a large experience with this technology for the control of spasticity associated with cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, etc. This program is provided in association with the Division of Rehabilitation Medicine at Primary Children's Medical Center.

3) Evaluation and management of cervical spine stability problems, such as in Down syndrome: Questions often come up regarding the evaluation and treatment of cervical spine stability problems in the Down syndrome population. How much atlantoaxial subluxation in the Down syndrome patient is too much? Or, how much activity restriction is appropriate in these patients? These questions are dealt with by a pediatric neurosurgeon experienced in the surgical management of the pediatric spine.

4) Endoscopic surgery: We have a large experience with endoscopic techniques in neurosurgery. We treat many hydrocephalus patients with endoscopic surgery, which may reduce or eliminate their need for a shunt.

5) Spina Bifida and Myelomeningocele. We are part of a multidisciplinary clinic participating in the management of patients with spina bifida and associated conditions such as hydrocephalus, tethered cord, syringomyelia and Chiari malformation..

6) Multidisciplinary brain tumor clinic: This clinic includes representatives from pediatric oncology, neuropsychology, radiation therapy, neuroradiology, and neurosurgery. Patients are treated and followed according to nationwide brain tumor protocols, including a new chemotherapy protocol for the treatment of low-grade astrocytomas. We are participants in the Children's Cancer Center of the Huntsman Cancer Institute.

7) Advanced intraoperative neurosurgical guidance techniques: We routinely use state-of-the-art computer aided guidance techniques during surgery, a proven method for safer surgery and better outcomes.

8) Evaluation and management of skull deformities (craniosynostosis): We see a large number of patients with both positional moulding and craniosynostosis. We are happy to provide opinions regarding the presence or absence of synostosis. We also have comprehensive treatment options for patients with benign positional moulding. We are part of the craniofacial team here at the Primary Children's Medical Center.

9) Enlarged head size: Many questions regarding abnormal OFC's and head growth velocities come up during development. We are happy to evaluate these patients and participate in their management when appropriate.

10) Clinical Trials and Research: We are leading international research projects in order to improve upon our current services including:

  • Hypothermia for head injury
  • Multi-center clinical trials in hydrocephalus
  • Comparing different shunts for children with hydrocephalus
  • Assessing endoscopic shunt insertion
  • Testing adjustable shunts

These are but a few of our efforts to provide comprehensive neurosurgical services to children
of Utah and the Intermountain West. If you have any questions or would like to contact us directly,
please do not hesitate to call 801-662-5340.
